looks like skepticism was the right reaction when microsoft announced it was hiring jerry seinfeld as its new $10 million pitchman. after seeing the new ad, you might wonder what seinfeld helping bill gates pick out a new pair of shoes has to do with software. the answer, in the classic seinfeld sense of the word, is nothing.

nevertheless, as commentators rightly point out, the brand ad is getting its primary job done- getting people to talk about microsoft (without even mentioning the word). microsoft officials who phoned reporters Friday (to "explain" the commercial) said it is indeed a campaign to re-brand windows, "the start of a conversation... easily the largest marketing campaign we've ever had."

chemical brothers to produce new MGMT record

so MGMT have been swapping emails with the chemical bros and the latter may now produce MGMT's second album. they plan to experiment to create a different sound- "it won't be dance music".

instead a gigantic double album is being considered– one disc of pop, the other of psychedelia. "we thought we'd go for the cliched, overly ambitious sophomore album," vanwyngarden wryly announced.

HBO has changed my life

First was Sex And The City, then Entourage. Now, The Wire.



Loads of friends had told me about this series (it's up to Season 5 in the US!) but I had avoided it for the following reasons:

I get totally hooked on television shows on DVD and binge on episodes, often watching three or four in a row in one sitting

I haven't had much time at home lately

And when I am at home, I shouldn't just sit on my ass and watch TV

That said. The Wire is worth every hour of my life each episode takes!

Its a cop show, but not your average Law And Order bullshit melodrama. The focus is on the stories and characters, not the blood and gore. Plus, Dominic West who plays Detective James McNulty is super handsome and a pleasure to watch, even when drunk and bitching about his fellow B-More coppers.

Wood Harris plays Avon Barksdale. He's fantastic. But he has the longest fingers I have ever seen. I wish I could find a picture, they're seriously so super long! Apparently he is jailed by McNulty during this first Season... but since I've only just started watching I'm not up to that part yet and don't want to spoil it for myself!

But seriously, this is a fucking amazing show. Worth the $50 odd that the box set will cost you from the HBO site. Actually, just go there now and buy it now.

And while HBO may have totally destroyed any chance of finding myself a boyfriend before summer (I have a LOT of DVDs to catch up on if Season 5 is already half-way through in America), I am hoping I find someone who loves this show as much as I do. Just imagine romantic candle-lit dinners discussing McNulty's alcoholism and arrogance, debating whether he's a good cop doing bad things, or just as hopeless as the rest of the Baltimore police department...

King Hit!

Earlier this year Heaps Decent babes the King Sisters sat in a studio with Pase Rock and Chris Devlin and wrote a track.

9 months later, like a newly born baby, the track is ready for our ears.

An excerpt from Heapsdecent.com explains:

Devlin got to work on a hot beat while Pase helped the girls write some lyrics. Everyone was obsessed with Soulja Boy at the time so naturally every line had to be about cranking something. After a few vocal takes we were happy enough to go get Vietnamese. Devlin took the vocals and beat back to Philly (read: Boston) and hooked up with Ghostdad to add that wobbly bass we hear kids on the internet like so much. After a few months of “Dude have you finished that track yet” emails, the track was finished. Alright!!

We met Heather and Janey through some of the girls we worked with at Juniperina with M.I.A. Heather was 15 when we met her and was an avid singer and dancer. Each week she brought someone new with her to the studio; her sister, her friends and one time her mum came in to lay down a verse. When Radioclit were in town they got Heather to sing on one of Esau Mwamwaya’s beats with Ears. After recording some thirty takes with Radioclit, Heather commented that the experience “wasn’t as fun as when Spank Rock were here”.

people like to call them 'devoted' for short but i want to start a movement to call them 'the few'.

the new few record 'baby, you're a vampire' is finallyyyyyy done and done with a release date slated for november. the sydney 6-piece are currently doing all that fun stuff you do before releasing like making videos, organising tours and adding myspace friends.

the album was recorded by scotty horscroft at bjb and mixed by jacquire king in nashville. jacquire has worked with kings of leon (produced the new album), tom waits, modest mouse, third eye blind (!) etc. and also has quite the australian flavour to his discography with work on releases by 67 special, dappled cities, end of fashion and the few. ozzie, ozzie, ozzie.

*ANECDOTE BREAK... while mixing in nashville, ben and barry from the band were caught in a flash flood/hurricane alert. the hurricane alarms went off everywhere and ben turned, paled faced to a local and said 'what we do if a hurricane come..' (real southern and stuff to which she replied 'y'all just find you a ditch and jump in it!'

'the few' are currently previewing tracks on their myspace and you can download one of the new tracks right hurrrr.

So KCi & JoJo played a show at the Enmore Saturday night? Who knew? Did you go? I couldn't get tickets.

Anyway, check out the video above (about 1.50 min in). JoJo walked off stage for about 5 minutes, then came back out to sing 'All My Life' and passed out mid song. Dopealicious!

BUT K-Ci wants y'all to know that his bro JoJo did NOT pass out because of drugs. Here are some things that were revealed...

- The 20 hour flight did a number on his body.
- His 'epileptic' was playing up.
- KCi also to be blamed was Bill Gates for 'inventing the computer', frustrated by all the drug claims being hurled at his bro on the internets.
- K-Ci said he didn't show concern when JoJo 'passed out' mid-way through their song because laying down on stage is something that JoJo occasionally does when they perform.
- And to prove that the bros don't do drugs, he said he can't even spell the word 'cocaine' and that he avoids drinking coke because it sounds too much like 'cocaine'.

I'm fine with that. Makes sense.

it's been a long time since i've heard anything as hauntingly beautiful as this. probably around this time with beirut was the closest i have come recently. but not even close really.

bon iver (french for 'good winter' and purposely misspelt) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment, and it’s exactly what the music of justin vernon represents.

even before i found out about the backstory, the record exuded such a strong sense of loneliness and isolation that you couldn’t help but get lost in it. vernon moved to his father's remote cabin in the woods of north-western wisconsin at the onset of winter escaping from the breakup of his long time band and relationship for four months, “I was about 25 miles from anything- even a gas station- and even miles from another home. the only thing you'd really hear is a slight howl from the highway and then maybe birds, but really it was so quiet. I had nothing but the sound of my own thoughts, and they were really loud.”

he lived there alone filling his days with twelve-hour recording blocks, wood splitting and other chores around the land, “… about february every year is when it gets really hard. and I think the starkness and the greyness and the lack of sun, and when the dirt and the salt sort of build up at the side of the roads, i think it's when people's hearts really start to give out...that's when you remember it the most.” the end result is for emma, forever ago. despite the layers and complexity, the record was created with nothing more than a few microphones, some aged recording equipment and the constant echo of better times will come.

debut album, be better. impossible. soooooo it makes me wish it was raining so i could sit inside and just put them on repeat and do sweet f-a (except maybe drink warm apple cider like it was my job). but instead it's sunny, i'm at work and lily allen is on triple j... headphones please.

this weekend

so i had a much quieter time than last weekend (splendour in the grass)... i was really really sick from friday and have only just begun to feel human. i feel like i don't get sick that often and i'm definitely far from being a hyperchondriac. but this bout of the flu just floored me and i basically thought i was going to die. i had actually begun to feel the onset on thursday night but i was out, there were free drinks and was forced to stay out later than anticipated because of... the lift. ohhhh the lift.... like the lure of the siren song, never what it seems to be yet who among us can resist? so i overdid it and got into a bad state on friday.

where is this all going you ask? i'm going to share a few things i did this weekend while on my deathbed because really, being sick is VERY exciting news for those of us who like to waste time!

1. i watched the olympics opening ceremony. it was extremely well-received by the critics and didn't do too bad at all as far as ratings. i missed the good part with all the theatrics because i was asleep (in a coma) and woke up when all the country's teams were coming out. yawnfest 2008. but once i started watching, i had to stay up for australia who came out third last. so after sitting through five thousand countries (sao-tome principe?) anyway in case you missed it, here's one of the highlights...



2. i was introduced to pavement for the first time PROPERLY with the help of two young men. 'harness your hopes' is amazing. so good to have so much new music to listen to. there's a few bands out there that i have "missed the boat" on and want to at least listen to and make up my mind, over whether the fanfare is justified than to let is pass by altogether. sooooo.... pavement.... tick. and believe me, it's worth it.



3. ok..... i watched (on my laptop obvs) babymama (which was sooooo bad. tina fey, i'm blaming amy poehler, but really...) and you don't mess with the zohan (i haven't finished it yet but it is pretty good. i'm a big adam sandler fan though. and please look out for a familiar face to the movestill community at the paul mitchell salon in the movie)



4. at about 1am on saturday morning i received the sad news of bernie mac's death almost in real time as news was filtering from the chicago hospital he was staying at. a friend of mine was about to get on a flight to the city and sent me a message telling me about it. so sad.

5. i read the following story from on the exquisite jessie baylin's blog. so cute.

i met a spanish man today while sitting at the bar for lunch at pastis in nyc... i was minding my own business, eating my eggplant feta cherry tomato arugula salad, drinkin' my wine.. and this nice young man started to talking to me. i told him he made an excellent choice by ordering the steak sandwich, that it might change his life... he took a bite and agreed.

 i then asked him if he was living in nyc or just visiting? he told me that he was here to "see someone". i asked where she/he was, and he said it was a bit of a story...
 7 years ago he met a woman in madrid. they had some kind of love affair i'm assuming though he didn't really get into specifics. he told me they had made a pact that in 2008, on august 8th (8.8.08) they would meet at 8pm on top of the empire state building.... my heart went a'flutter. i'm so easy..

. he said he had flown here from spain for the weekend, just to see if she would be there, but with no expectation in his heart.

 its just after 8pm on 8.8.08!!! i think she's there :-) i can feel it!

 this is the kind of stuff in like that inspires me.

6. the 10 best lightsabre mash-up's of all time... a whole bunch of videos made by people with lots and lots of time (or with the flu) who have animated lightsabres into movies where there previously were none. BLOGGGGGGG.
