bmore of a hipster

I should be writing an essay about Bourdieu... instead I'm listening to D Lake

The first I heard of D Lake was his remix of Gotye's gorgeous track 'Hearts a Mess' from the album Mixed Blood, released earlier this year. After hearing me spin the single on FBi, Daren got in touch and sent me his digital EP 'B More Of A Hipster'. It's not out yet, so you get to hear it first!

I've been meaning to post these up for a while, but have been busy and haven't had the chance. So rather than wait until I have the time to write a proper profile, I thought I should just get them out to you. Each track is reflective of the Baltimore club sounds we love at movestill so... I hope you like them too!

Let me know what you think! If you love, I'll post some more, and let you know what he's up to. Maybe even include an interview or something fancy like that...

hilarious, yet slighty cryptic post title

blah blah blah, vaguely connected story, blah blah blah, name drop, blah blah blah, rhetorical question perhaps?

link to M.I.A remix

bring element of first paragraph back. blah blah blah, try to answer question perhaps?

helps having friends in high places

Flostradamus' Kid Sister (pardon the pun - ha ha! ohh...) is so hot. And now a blonde?! I think it really suits her!

She is 'good friends' with A-Track and thus, it seems, 'friends' with Kanye. The graduate kindly lent his services for her 'Pro Nails' video clip. The single was released this week.

I think I might go get a manicure this arvo...

And now some video love!

Sweetpea Home for Karen Walker

I went shopping for a new pair of jeans today. Jeans shopping is always something I dread, as I can never find the right pair... they're always too low, too tight, too saggy-bummed, too short in the leg, too long in the leg, too you-get-the-idea.

So you can imagine my excitement when in Incu Clothing, I was distracted by something wonderful that completely took my mind off bad denim!

My favourite designer Karen Walker (see previous post) has combined two other of my great loves - Owl figurines and pillows - with a range of plush toys! Hoorah!

The collection includes quirky animals, giant fruit and little dolls in exclusive Karen Walker fabrics, each complementing Karen Walker Summer 07/08. All pieces are hand-made by Sweetpea designer Louise Cuckow, and remind me of toys I used to play with at my great-grandmothers house when I was really young.

These are my favourites...

but check out the full range here and here

Apparently this sample wasn't approved, and the track will never have an official released.

It reminds me of going out in Sydney, after having just turned 18 and moving from the country. I seriously didn't know there was more to Sydney than George st. Gross.

Will, there is more to music than Black Eyed Peas lyrics (Baby where’d you get your body from? Tell me where’d you get your body from. I got it from my mama. I got it from my mama.) and Daft Punk samples. Yes, they are a great band, but they can be left AS IS.

Don't get stuck on George st.

Go you Gore Thing

Maybe not as much as those kids, but I'm pretty excited that Al Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize this year. I think the work that he has been doing is amazing. Upon receipt of the honour, he said, "We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level."

Gore was one of the first politicians to grasp the seriousness of climate change and to call for a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. He held the first congressional hearings on the subject in the late 1970s and has continued to be a world-wide ambassador ever since.

To celebrate how great Al Gore is, here are a couple of fun trivia facts about him that you can throw into conversation...

-A distant relative of Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson.

-Was actor Tommy Lee Jones's room-mate at Harvard.

Speaking of... did you know that Marcia Hines is Condoleeza Rice's cousin? Sweartogod!

i just fell off my chair.

This site- planet hiltron- is gold! People photoshop celebrities onto regular chump's bodies and the result is art in its purest form.

Here are some examples:

Posh & Becks

J.Lo & Marc Anthony

Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck

I'd like to thank honorary movestiller Marc Hendrick (best known for being the creator of 'Das Monk') for telling me about this. It's literally made my life.

BUS-TED.

so. everyone. i moved to newtown a couple of weeks ago. i am loving it and am already "so newtown", here are some reasons why:

- tried African cuisine for the first time.
- went to the Vanguard and caught myself next to Tim Freedman.
- walk in to Pretty Dog every day, as if I momentarily forget that I can't afford anything in there.
- catch myself in the gluten-free aisle at Franklins eventhough I'm not a ceoliac.
-bought incense at Newtown Variety- 'Chandan' scent.
- get asked for money about 5 times a day and always reply with "I'll help you when you help yourself!" (JOKE guys. CHILL)
-changed 'My Cinemas' from Greater Union Hornsby to Dendy Newtown.
- realise that my friends in Surry Hills may as well live in Sudan. there is no way to see them. ever. unless i get a cab. but so many people I know live in newtown so why would i?

anyway another thing that has come from my move is the shift from trains being my main source of transport (no more mX...refer to earlier post) to now it being buses. this has been quite good actually. despite the fact that i basically never get a seat and about ten buses drive past me without stopping, i'm liking the buses.

two things happened this morning. firstly it was my first time using a pre-paid bus ticket thingy. so that was extremely nerve-wracking, i imagined all these scenarios in my head, putting it in the machine the wrong way and some really cute guy seeing me and laughing "other way you dumbfuck!" etc. But it actually went pretty well and no one seemed to be paying much attention to me (weird).

the second thing that happened was that I was lucky enough to get a seat this morning in one of those four-seater compartments at the front where I was staring back at the rest of the bus. hate them! after I'd been on the bus for about 5 minutes there were no seats left and a lady got on the bus who was about 45 years old. she seemed quite fit, healthy and whatever else. she had a couple of shopping bags with her too.

the girl sitting directly in front of me (some Sydney Uni student) saw the lady get on and after a moment of questioning what she was about to do, came out with "do you want to sit down?" well. well. well. what had she started. the shopping bag lady gave her a look like "are you kidding me right now?", shot her a sarcastic smile and said "no I'm fine thanks." much awkwardness followed. but i actually love a bit of awkwardness when it doesn't involve myseld. I was SO happy that my iPod had died so I could hear this whole exchange.

but it really got me thinking. where do you draw the line? when are people old enough to be offered seats? what is the criterion? what if a relatively young and healthy person has white hair (remember how it was cool to dye your hair grey for a second)? what if a clearly old person is fit as a fiddle and talking on their mobile and listening to an iPod, and not "old" in the "traditional sense"? should they be left standing?

personally, i've decided the day I get offered a seat on a bus is the day I officially stop catching public transport.

more "so newtown" updates to follow...

winn me over

(Wow. What a fucking cheesy title!)

Rather than posting something new, I thought this might be a nice reminder of something great

rebellion lies

Ive been listening to the record non-stop since their Big Day Out appearance was announced early last week. I. Cant. Fucking. Wait!!!!!!

They're famous for their encore's... Check out this video of their 2nd encore, side of stage, on the pavement after a recent show at Randall's Island Park NYC

Yep, its 'Kiss Off' by Violent Femmes. Nice huh! Fingers crossed they pull out these moves in Sydney

(If this and their Glastonbury show was anything to go by, we should be in for something pretty special! Watch the videos if you havent yet, just the enormity of the crowd alone is incredible)

all over surry hills.

Although I may not be getting paid for all the posters I'm spewing out, I'm getting printed everywhere... which is sometimes more exciting. Not only is this DJ Ayres poster all over the city, it's going to be a crazy party. Come.

forgive me

Last week was one of the craziest ever. Post crazy week, I seem to be doing ok. What has battled is coming home every night to this.

My aim this weekend was to clean the brothel that is my room. It's sunday, almost four, and I haven't touched it. I think perhaps, the opposite. I found myself littering in my own room. I'm hideous.

OH MY GOD

Go here and listen to "Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)" produced by Will.I.Am. Then send your thanks to Pitchfork for providing such a sweet pop tune mid week

'Shine' drops early next year, and features collaborations with Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Mark Ronson, Wyclef Jean. Holy. Shit.

she's baaaaaack

Tigarah is a clever chick! She studied political sciences, contemplating a career as a politician or ambassador, before deciding music was the best avenue through which she could express herself and started writing tunes in her Tokyo apartment.

She met her L.A born production partner MR.D during a trip to Sao Paulo and Rio, and since 2003 the two have been recording together and have signed a deal with Universal Records Japan.

Tigarah's debut album is out Autumn 2008.

But because I love you, here's a teaser, because thats a long time to wait!

movestill goes international

PPS. CHECK IT!

It was was made for us by this guy

He made this for himself!

Movestill now lives in southern France and Movestill always loves yesyesyesyo

my eyes hurt

What I thought would be a day of celebs, vodkas, electro and celebs was more a blinding headache of orange, pink, green and yellow as centennial park was overcome by fuzzy parklife flurotica!

Where did the music lovers go? Were they hiding among the VIP lounges (also appropriately fluro coloured)? All I saw were super aggressive, super drugged-and-loved-up, super brightly dressed teenagers! I shouldn't feel old at 23, should I?

However despite the aforementioned downfalls, I thoroughly enjoyed Parklife 07! Hot and sunny, and with movestill, FBi and S.Y.L.K! by my side it was, as neha would say, "uh.may.zing"

Bring on summer, bring on the beats and bring on great times with great friends.

Just having a fun,
Michaella x

PS! New Tigarah coming asap! Start getting excited now!
