HEADLINE: RAPPER WORKS WITH CHRIS MARTIN

And it's not just Kanye and Jay-z.

Philip Martin, better known by his stage name Bishop Lamont, is an American rapper from California.

His new album The Reformation is 60% completed. According to Martin, the album will be about "rebellion, revolution, the positive and negative things in life and organized chaos"

It is also reported that Martin is in the studio working for The Reformation with Chris Martin from Coldplay. Maybe it's the fact that they share a last name, or the fact that it's now a law. Make poverty history and combine the music of coldpay with rap.

Either way, this track rebellious, revolutionary, expresses both the positive and negative sides of life and is neatly chaotic. and it's heaps good.

its been six years

I remember walking into Mr Taits art class, hoping for a prac lesson, when my friend Lydia told me that Aaliyah had died. I HAD seen Romeo Must Die, and I sure as hell knew Try Again, I just couldn't seem to picture her. My mind had totally blanked.

Lydia didn't help me. She couldn't remember what Romeo Must Die was actually called OR the Timberland NUMBER freakin 1. She just kept saying 'You know, Aaliyah.' Mr Tait didn't know who Aaliyah was either. Lydia seemed sad regardless, and my street cred was slowly dropping.

Wouldn't happen now, as I've made sure that I know every detail of her phyiscal appearance, just in case I ever get quizzed again.

But yeah, six years.

Pitbull is not dead. He's alive and making crazy/lovable tunes. I'm putting 10 bucks on the fact that he WONT come to Australia this year.

Pitbull - Move Shake Drop (Satisfaction Cover)

In an attempt to RAISE my street cred, I ran into Ice Cube yesterday while walking home.

young and restless

I'm feeling restless at the moment. I cant concentrate on one thing, but keep jumping between university, radio work, writing work, moving house... I'm sure you know the feeling- when there are so many ideas in your head, you cant concentrate. On anything!

I get like this every few months. And rather than dealing with it and getting shit done, I decide I should fuck off and see the world, and start making grand plans to travel to NY, Paris, Belgium, Berlin, London...

Bastien Lattanzio has a blog called ugly smile and whenever I feel like I do now, I always escape the banality of my everyday through his photographs.

At once intimate and ephemeral, Lattanzio's photographs have such a infectious positivity. Plus, the parties always look so fucking rad! Call me a voyeur, but I love these vignettes of other peoples lives - probably because I will never meet the folk in the pictures, and so have no emotional investment in the images.

Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield started making records together in 1998 as The Brunettes. I was missing out. The first I heard of them was their second full-length LP out 2004, Mars Loves Venus. Their new album is Structure and Cosmetics, released everywhere else on Sub Pop (Sub Pop!!) but in local record stores courtesy of the very wonderful Speak 'n Spell. Actually, Cut Off Your Hands are signed to Speak 'n Spell too! Damn, for a label working out the back of a second-hand clothing store in Chippendale they are doing fine, fine things.

I'm seeing The Brunettes perform tomorrow night at the Hoey. I hope they play Mars Loves Venus.

Please go to their myspace and listen to B.A.B.Y, then download if you were alien and then go to 416 Bourke Street Surry Hills tomorrow night and watch them perform their pop magic

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

According to genetic scientists redheads are becoming rarer and could be extinct in 100 years time. The current National Geographic magazine reports that less than 2 per cent of the world's population has natural red hair- "created by a mutation in northern Europe thousand of years ago" (direct quote). Global intermingling has reduced the chances of redheads meeting and so producing little redheads of their own. Although it takes only one red-haired parent to produce ginger babies the chances are slim. Two redheads obviously creates a much stronger possibility. Scotland has the world's highest proportion. It is estimated that 40 per cent of Scots carry the red gene and 13 per cent actually have red hair.

Some experts warn they could be gone as early 2060...

Shocking statistics. I'm sure you won't disagree. Look at that face (see above). There's just too much at stake here!

But the thing is! This can be stopped. I want everyone to start convincing their redheaded friends that "hey dude, scotland' awesome, hey? i would totally live there someday, i reckon. girls are hot AS too. you should move there and start sexing." etc.

This Plastic Little remix is pretty incredible. I'm on my way to work now and I ACTUALLY can't leave because I keep listening to it.

It came from Discobelle.net and before that cord man won a plastic little remix comp.

Ok, one more listen.

I don't know if you ever came across Lupe Fiasco's hypebeast blog. It was probably the best marketing tool (for lupe) on the internet. By looking through the archives you can see all his favourite companies slowly caving in. For example one post would express an interest in a product, and the next would be Lupe 'rockin' the wear.

It's also pretty informative. Growing up in a country town AND attending a public, i had NO idea of the following:

Fasting

Muslims practice sawm, or fasting, for the entire month of Ramadan. This means that they may eat or drink nothing, including water, while the sun shines. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars (duties) of Islam. As with other Islamic duties, all able Muslims take part in sawm from about age twelve.

During Ramadan in the Muslim world, most restaurants are closed during the daylight hours. Families get up early for suhoor, a meal eaten before the sun rises. After the sun sets, the fast is broken with a meal known as iftar. Iftar usually begins with dates and sweet drinks that provide a quick energy boost.

Fasting serves many purposes. While they are hungry and thirsty, Muslims are reminded of the suffering of the poor. Fasting is also an opportunity to practice self-control and to cleanse the body and mind. And in this most sacred month, fasting helps Muslims feel the peace that comes from spiritual devotion as well as kinship with fellow believers.

ALHAMDULILAH!!!!….MAY ALLAH BLESS YOU AND YOURS DURING THIS HOLY MONTH!!!!

THANKYOU LUPE.

I guess being such a spiritual person explains his giving nature. Either that or it's the standard path that rappers take.

LETTER OF THE DAY

Dear movestill,

An issue has been plaguing me for the last few months and it finally came to a head this evening. I am one of the few people I know that catches trains on a regular, if not daily, basis. Having recently been overseas for some period of time, my biggest shock upon returning home was the rise and rise of ‘mX’. I’m talking about the free “newspaper” that is shoved into your arms at the central city stations every weekday from 5pm to 7pm for the commute home. (And what an awkward interchange the “collection” of the paper always is. It’s meant to be quick- walk past, grab paper, keep walking. Without missing a beat. What about when there’s a whole crowd that rushes towards the newspaper shover? What about the people he misses? Oddly, I have seen some people wait for the shover to get another paper from his stack.)

mX is a revolution. I was the only person on my whole carriage (apart from a really really old woman who was asleep… dead?) not reading it. Its not peer pressure, there’s a kinship to it. You can feel everyone look around smiling at everyone else in mutual appreciation and understanding that reading mX is a daily ritual now. As much a part of their days as the morning coffee or boring sex life. And completely educated types too! Men who get on at Redfern and wear chinos (Sydney Uni lecturers) are into it! It’s like they think “Oh it’s ok, its mX, everyone reads it, it’s a PAPER.” But in reality it’s no different to Who Weekly or Perez or even soft-porn, at times. Is it just a meaningless escape for everyone or do they secretly relish it and get a little excited when the paper is shoved into their person?

Today’s highlight article was “Reading sends us to sleep” and it stated that “analysts attribute it to competition from the internet and other media”. I attribute it to mX. Gone are the days when people read and you could tell so much about their personality from their book selections (The Da Vinci Code- “wants to read more”). It’s all homogenized now. All mX readers- “want to be young again”. The paper is targeted at 18-30 year olds. What with the A-Grade articles on Facebook vs. Myspace, to the dumbed- down section headings- “Gloom & Doom” (news section), “What the?” (facts), “Bummer” (when a movie deal falls through), “It’s true!” (facts), “Nice one” (a feel-good Oprah-esque tale), “What in the weird?” (strange facts), “Good/Gawd”. You can almost imagine every young starlet in Hollywood watching the news and saying “Gloom & Doom blah, blah, blah…” But forget the headings, how good are the headlines?! Just today one of the first class journalists came up with these “Nicole finds it a role-rcoaster” and “Hayes tongue Thai-d” (insert applause) Someone give these people a raise!

But by FAR the “best” section of this (toilet) paper is “mX Talk” where readers can write and text in. Mainly about train delays and bad weather but also to find their objects of affection. Who is this purple-scarved girl on the North Shore line that everyone is lusting over? People really get into it! I can’t wait for the first mX hook-up, marriage even. mX baby! They can call it Max! Oh the possibilities. mX Talk also has a question that they ask three “normal” people. Today’s was “What’s one thing you’d change about yourself?” Sam Thomas, 19, student, Kingsford, replied “My eye colour. I’d like one to be red like Marilyn Manson.”

As I got off the train tonight flustered and amazed, the unimaginable happened. A man picked up his mX and took it with him! Didn’t even leave it behind for another to enjoy! What was he going to do??? Finish reading the “What in the Weird?” section it in bed?

Neha, 22, Flustered.

one step closer to the franti festival

my world was rocked today.

the up!fest has been cancelled.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Frontier Touring regrets to inform that it has become necessary to reschedule the Up! Festival Tour for this September. All tickets are refundable at the original point of purchase. Michael Franti and Spearhead very much look forward to returning to Australia in 2008. News regarding upcoming Ben Lee headline tour dates will be announced shortly. Thanks to everyone who has dedicated their time to this exciting idea.

i think there were simply too many acts. I've said once, i've said it a thousand times over, a michael franti festival WILL SELL OUT.

enough tears.

'first love' (demo version)

she can't rap, but she doesn't pretend to be able to. and thats why i love her. 'first love' is such sugary pop and reminiscent of 80s french house - totally unexpected from miss teen potty-mouth usa.

maybe the french are having more of an impact her than i first thought!

Beck for breakfast

It's only been a couple of weeks since US country legend Lee Hazlewood died.

Beck has covered Hazlewood songs during his live shows in the past, and last year recorded a version of "Forget Marie" (originally from Hazlewood's 1970 record 'Cowboy in Sweden') in Nashville's Blackbird Studios.

Stream it here and listen out for the amazingly romantic line “standing on the corner feeling raindrops race down my face" ... just having a moment...

camel tries to sex owner

no. for real. i was actually just about to go to sleepytown when this shit me like a tonne of nike kicks...

"an australian woman was found dead at the family’s sheep and cattle ranch in queensland. she had been given a camel as a 60th birthday present earlier this year because of her love of exotic pets. the camel was just 10 months old but already weighed 152kg and had come close to suffocating the family’s pet goat on a number of occasions. on saturday, the woman apparently became the object of the male camel’s desire. it knocked her to the ground, lay on top of her and displayed what the police delicately described as mating behaviour."

sweet. dreams.

listening to art

What do New Young Pony Club, The Chemical Brothers, Klaxons and The Long Blondes all have in common (apart from the English-ness)? Well over the last year all of them were inspired to write a track about artworks at Tate Modern in London. Artists including Warhol, Rothko and Duchamp were among those that got the musicians’ creative juices flowing. And now the ground-breaking twelve month project is looking for one final addition to the project- ‘Your Tate Track’.

Tate Modern is asking 16- 24 year olds to create music inspired by art from the current Tate Collection. The tracks can then be uploaded to your MySpace page (ooooh how “modern”, Tate Modern) and entered into the competition. The winner will be announced mid-September and the winning track will be installed in the gallery on a listening post next to the work which inspired it. You (obviously the winner will be someone reading this blog) will also fly to London, receive feedback and meet many of the other acts (including James “Peace Now” Klaxons). You’ve only got till August 31st so c’mon people! We got this!

so you think you can internet

it was only a matter of time after nine-eleven that the makers of law and order felt it 'acceptable' to include the events in their plotlines.

the more you watch the show, and the more spin-offs that spin-off, the more you can see the 'acceptable' gap grows smaller and smaller. after this shocking headline, i'm pretty sure facebook will kill someone on CSI Miami in the coming month.

either that, or facebook will end up in a jay-z verse. and will prob feat chris martin. ala Kingdom Come's - BEACH CHAIR.

Beirut doesn't have 99 problems. Only 40254 friends.

Levins look, i'm linking Animal Collective. These guys are heaps good and shit.

Wait for it, waittttt for it..... I give you.... French. DJ's.

Birdy Nam Nam are a DJ crew from France whose members are Crazy-B, DJ Pone, DJ Need, and Little Mike. Together they have won several prizes throughout their career including the DMC Technics 2002 World TEAM Championships. Their schtick is "first ever boys band doing music with turntables".

One of my friends saw them at SXSW last year, well when I say saw, she was listening but not watching them. At the end of the set, she realised that it wasn't an electronic act with keyboards and synths and drum machines, but just four guys with turntables. Apparently it was pretty awesome and she wished she had watched more and chatted up the Josh Homme look-alike dude at the show, less.

Durrty Goodz

Durrty Goodz is the pseudonym for Dwayne Mahorn, a 22 year old MC from the UK

He first appeared on Stretch with Dizzee Rascal in 2004, and the grime scene blew up with excitement - Dizzee had won the Mercury prize, and it seemed there was now another MC whose double-time beats were just as promising.

Universal Records snapped him up, and Durrty hid away to begin work on his debut album. But. His once estranged brother Crazy Titch (the hidden track on his Axiom EP retells the moment they met, after coming first and second in an MC battle!) was shortly after jailed for murder, and the world decided that was more a more important focus than Durrty's rhymes.

A few years on and Durrty is back, prepping us for his debut album Born Blessed with the recently released Axiom. It was worth the wait! An exciting blend of ragga, grime, dubstep and garage, Axiom heralds him as the new focus of the UK scene - which seems pretty timely considering Wiley's farewell to MCing after the release of Playtime Is Over. Seems for Durrty, playtime has only just begun. Finally, eh!

top of their games

After winning an Esky award for “Best Free Live-Music Site” only a year after its inception, the only way was up for daytrotter.com. Twice a week, in the middle of hectic touring schedules some of the biggest indie bands screech into Rock Island, Illinois’ tiny Futureappletree Studio One to record live and straight to tape. Cold War Kids guitarist Jonnie Russell recently declared the site to be “one of the last bastions of creative bootlegging.” Not only do Daytrotter give us a wealth of free collectible live sessions, they also interview today’s best independent artists and then post the results alongside fabulous original illustrations. Kudos indeed.

Don’t miss hometown gents Dappled Cities’ session from last week here. It’s a real highlight, and the guys from the web-site didn't disagree- "It was one of the rare sessions that hit us 10 times harder than we thought it would. They made jaws crack against the floor and still have us reeling nearly a month later. It’s a great feeling."

Kinda makes ya proud, don't it?

quick question - can a doctor diagnose dementia from the couch? big brother style perhaps?

Waiting For Fernando

A gaggle of impossibly hip of 20-somethings loiter on the stretch of street between Kawa and The Gaslight.

Waiting. Hoping. Chain smoking.

The heel of a passerby clacks on the pavement outside blank_space, and they swing around (scowls firmly in place), expecting to see Fernando Frisoni clicking his camera in their direction.

They wait and they wait. But Fernando doesn’t come.

The Sun-Herald is the Channel 10 news of publications, so perhaps I shouldn’t advertise my addiction to the ‘S’ lift out. But the Urban Style page, Fernando Frisoni’s parade of fashionable young things on Sydney Streets is my first port of call on a Sunday morning (or afternoon, more accurately).

Since I always unnervingly gaze at the clothes of those round me, it’s good to indulge in the habit in only my own company. Plus the claustrophobic nature of the Sydney-scene means that I usually know at least one person on the page each week, making my staring-session infinitely more enjoyable.

That was until I started to quiz my friends who have appeared on the hallowed page on what it was like to be fernandoed. After the mandatory self-concious laugh and deflective “Oh, I know how embarrassing!” type comment, it became routine for my photographed friend to casually point out some bizarre omission or fabrication…
“Yeah I can’t believe he said my cardigan was from Top Shop, it was totally from SES”… or “everything I was wearing was from Anglicare $5 kilo, and he had me wearing ‘Vintage’ and 'Cheap Monday jeans'", or even “I wasn’t ‘spotted in Neutral Bay’, I was in Bondi”.

Another friend, and shop-assistant at an Oxford Street Fashion Spot tells of Fernando bowling in to her shop and asking the staff to appear on his page; only after he has styled them in items he selects from the racks.

Sorry to get all Monica Attard on yo ass, but why does Fernando Frisoni appear to have such a rudimentary grasp of the truth? It isn’t easy to pin down his motivations. But Fernando told my source (dressed twice in her workplace for Urban Style) that Chanel sent his mother a free handbag on the condition that he would cease writing “fake Chanel from Chinatown” in his captions, as they thought it bad for business. And ever since, every dodgy looking quilted and chained number has been tagged either ‘Chanel’ or ‘Vintage Chanel’. So what of the phase, when week after week, at least one street-urchin just happened to be sporting an item from the latest Josh Goot collection- was this carefully orchestrated by the Josh Goot publicity team?

Look, I know this isn't exactly Cash For Comment, but it does annoy me. I see people wrapped in personal and inspiring packaging every day- the page should reflect this and not Fernando’s confused agenda.

We are already so beholden to the forces of fashion...

...that it’s nice to think occasionally this same world could pay genuine tribute to the exciting magic that starts on the streets.

CRS - US Placers

Promise i wont mention these douches again.

thanks ALOT wino.

Earlier this year my good friend maya and i had the surreal experience of taking ?uestlove to the Royal Easter Show. not only did i come home with a happy feet showbag, (FREAKIN. SICK), he spoke about his nine day re-mix marathon of Pharrell's IN YOUR MIND.

Similar to the mid morning phone call from pharell, 'dude! you gotta remix my ENTIRE album', the project (once finished) was put on hold after a second mid morning phone call, 'dude! i need to work with AMY WINEHOUSE!'.

In between teasing all the fake bape (other wise know as 'fape'), ?uest told us he had no idea what would happen with the work. He played a few tracks on the hip hop show and then that was it.

almost eight months later, they're online. no sign of my fapes.

Its raining. I am always least productive when it rains. Rather than getting any work done, I play on the computer, watch DVDs and bake gluten free goodies.

Gluten Free Chocolate and Hazlenut cake

250 grams Gluten Free dark chocolate
125 grams butter
110 grams caster sugar
1/4 cup strong fresh coffee (add a flavoring e.g. vanilla essence/almond essence if you dont like coffee)
4 eggs separated
125 grams ground hazelnuts

Combine chocolate, butter, sugar & Coffee in saucepan and stir over LOW heat until dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in egg yolks and nuts. Whisk egg whites until firm and fold gently into chocolate mixture. Pour into a buttered 20cm baking pan. Bake for 1 hour (or until the skewer comes out clean) at 170C.

Enjoy! And go for a walk in the morning!

Its MIA week! Kala is released on Saturday and is also FBi's Album of the Week. Plus, we just cant get enough of her new bob!

This is an old video, but I'm continuing the MIA theme.

You can also compare her cover of Jimmy with the original, thanks to the lovely Opulent Magazine crew. The dude's stare is intense!

Now, meet Soko.

She is getting a lot of attention at the moment (see FBi Radio and Fat Planet), but if you haven't yet heard her stuff, listen up!

'I'll Kill Her'

Soko is 21, and from Paris. Formerly The Sokos, her partner (in love and music?) left after the release of their debut ep Not SoKute, and she now writes and records solo. Available only on iTunes, Not SoKute shows a refreshing vulnerability and a real gift for storytelling. The first single 'I'll Kill Her' has Soko, slighted in love, seeking revenge on "that bitch" who stole her boyfriend's heart, breaking hers in the process.

I like Soko a lot, I just hope I never do anything to upset her!

More here 'My Enemy' (perhaps the sequel to 'Ill Kill Her'?)
